How do you determine optimal charge VOLTAGE for a battery?

I'm going to play around a bit with some pv cells and I'd like to know if there's some rule of the thumb to determine the best output voltage for a battery of x voltage. (eg. 12V car battery, 6V marine deep-cycle battery, cell phone battery, etc..)
